Dosage Calculation Testing Policy

The dosage calculation testing policy exists to facilitate dosage calculation competence necessary for safe nursing practice. The nursing literature reports the majority of nursing errors occur in medication administration. Additionally, many hospitals require nurses to demonstrate dosage calculation proficiency as a requirement for employment.

It is imperative nursing students assume personal responsibility for maintenance of math skills throughout the nursing curriculum. The dosage calculation test serves as a means for continued assessment of these important skills by faculty.

All clinical students are required to pass a dosage calculation test by the end of the first of week of each clinical semester. Each course faculty will announce the date and time for the calculation test on the first day of class. The student is provided three attempts; the passing score is 100%. If the student cannot achieve a 100% score on the dosage calculation test in three attempts, they will be withdrawn from all clinical courses enrolled that semester and receive a "W".

Administration of the Second and Third Attempt Test

Students are to arrive at the testing area (to be assigned by the EMSON Office) at least 5-10 minutes before testing is scheduled to begin. The testing format will be paper and pencil. Upon leaving the testing area the student forfeits/terminates that testing opportunity and may not reenter the testing area during that hour.

Students are to bring their University student ID, and a #2 pencil. Non-programmable calculators will be permitted. Using calculators on cell phones or PDAs is NOT permitted. Using these types of calculators will cause the student to forfeit the exam. Students will be required to show in writing the steps for solving test items. The paper that demonstrates steps in calculating the answers will be submitted to the test proctor upon completion of the test.
