Code of Ethics

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing upholds the highest ethical standards and as such is obligated to develop nursing students into professional nurses capable of providing culturally competent care based on mutually respectful interactions. Students are expected to provide client privacy, confidentiality, and safety, while accepting individual accountability.

Students are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the ethical standards consistent with the American Nurses' Association Code of Ethics (http://nursingworld.org/ethics/code/protected_nwcoe813.htm).

According to the National Student Nurses Association, "students have a responsibility to society in learning the academic theory and clinical skills needed to provide nursing care. The clinical setting presents unique challenges and responsibilities while caring for human beings in a variety of health care environments. The code of Academic and Clinical conduct is based on an understanding that to practice nursing as a student is an agreement to uphold the trust society has placed in us. The statements of the code provide guidance for the nursing student in personal development of an ethical foundation and need not be limited strictly to the academic or clinical environment but can assist in the holistic development of a person." (http://www.nsna.org/pubs/pdf/code_of_ac.pdf).

EMSON students are developing their ability to practice the art and science of professional nursing and incorporating the overarching principles of:

The EMSON will not tolerate unethical behavior. Examples of unethical conduct include but are not limited to the following:

Failure to uphold the Code of Ethics will result in disciplinary action which includes counseling and possible dismissal from the nursing program.

Unethical conduct will be addressed by:

  1. Documentation of the act using the Student Counseling Record;
  2. Presenting evidence to the student;
  3. The problem will then be considered by the faculty; and
  4. The student who wishes to appeal decisions regarding unethical conduct may utilize existing University student grievance procedures found in the Catalog of Studies, page 36.
